(Kuching, 12th) A 41-year-old local woman fell into an online phone scam and was intimidated by someone on the grounds of a fake insurance claim, ultimately losing RM56,000.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu stated in a media release yesterday that the incident occurred on September 4. At the time, the victim received a call from a man claiming to be Faizal Madnoor from Etiqa Insurance.
“The suspect informed the victim that her personal information had been stolen and used to make a fake insurance claim at KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital in Petaling Jaya for the period of June 10 to 16, 2025, involving an amount of RM68,000.”

He added that the caller then intimidated the victim, threatening serious consequences if she did not cooperate to resolve the matter.
When the victim denied being involved, the call was transferred to another man claiming to be Sergeant Mohd Remi from the Bukit Aman Police Headquarters.
This “policeman” claimed she was involved in money laundering activities and instructed her to transfer funds to “resolve the case.”

Without any suspicion, the victim made four separate transfers to four different bank accounts, totaling RM56,000, only later realizing she had been scammed.
She then informed her husband and went to the police for help.
Alexson pointed out that from January 1 to November 10 this year, the Kuching District Commercial Crime Investigation Division received 91 similar scam cases, with victims losing as much as RM4.66 million.
He urges the public to remain vigilant and to immediately end suspicious calls without disclosing any personal or bank information.
