(Miri, 12th) Miri successfully challenged the record for the most EcoBrick donated in 24 hours today, achieving 3,751.8 kilograms and setting a Guinness World Record, marking a new milestone for Miri.
Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, stated at the event that this afternoon, Miri City set a new Guinness World Record, creating a historic milestone. The Miri community donated over 2,000 kilograms of eco-bricks, successfully embarking on an extraordinary journey, positioning Miri as a leader in environmental sustainability, of which I am very honored.
He said that Miri is home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites with natural beauty, such as the Mulu National Park and the recently added Niah National Park, which already possesses extraordinary natural historical wonders. Today, we are ready to add another honor that will signify Miri's commitment to the environment and sustainable development on the global stage. Now is the time to take bold and decisive action to protect our beloved hometown Miri.
“We have seen the positive impact of the eco-brick project, which aims to convert non-recyclable single-use plastics into building materials. Just two years ago, an event involving 26 organizations and over 9,000 participants set a record of 11,464 eco-friendly bricks, securing a place for Miri in the Malaysia Book of Records. More importantly, it proved that collective action can bring lasting change.”
He pointed out that I fully support this initiative, not only through funding but also by ensuring it becomes a genuine Miri community project. I am pleased to note that this work involves all sectors schools, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, business organizations, and the public working together towards common goals.
“I also urge the Miri Second Hand Recyclers Association to set higher goals and strive for greater achievements. I have also requested the Miri Division Office to establish a committee to bring together various government departments and agencies to participate in this project, with the ultimate goal of achieving our first Guinness World Record. Such a brilliant achievement proves the power of community collaboration and commitment.”
He stated that Miri first successfully entered the Malaysia Book of Records in May 2023, which is a solid foundation, thanks to the firm support and cooperation of the Miri community. This momentum has led us to today’s extraordinary Guinness World Record. This initiative is not only about setting a world record; it also has a positive impact on the environment.
“The EcoBrick project emphasizes our commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility while raising public awareness of the importance of a clean and green community.”
