On the 26th, France's Supreme Court issued a ruling, upholding former French President Sarkozy's guilty verdict in the 2012 campaign finance case.
The Supreme Court's decision means Sarkozy has been finally convicted. Sarkozy currently faces several other lawsuits, some of which are under appeal.
During the 2012 French presidential election, the Sarkozy campaign, while seeking re-election, used nearly 43 million euros (about 205.78 million ringgit) in campaign funds—well over the legal limit of 22.5 million euros—and also used false accounting to cover it up.
In September 2021, Sarkozy was found guilty in the first trial and immediately appealed. Last February, the Paris Court of Appeal in the second trial ruled him guilty of illegally using campaign funds and sentenced him to one year in prison (including 6 months suspended and 6 months to be served outside of prison). Sarkozy then appealed to the Supreme Court.
Sarkozy, now 70, served as President of France from 2007 to 2012.
