Involved in Copyright Disputes, ByteDance Reportedly Pauses Global Launch of New AI

According to informed sources, due to issues involving copyright disputes, Chinese tech giant ByteDance has suspended the global release plans of its next-generation video generation model, Seedance 2.0.

On Saturday (March 14), American tech media The Information cited two sources reporting that Seedance 2.0 has been delayed from global rollout by ByteDance because of copyright disputes involving major Hollywood studios and streaming platforms.

Reuters was temporarily unable to independently verify this report, and ByteDance also did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Last month, ByteDance stated that after American film and television companies, including Disney, threatened legal action, the company would take measures to prevent Seedance 2.0 from using intellectual property without authorization.

On February 13, Disney sent a letter to ByteDance, accusing it of using Disney works during the training and development of Seedance 2.0 without permission, and demanded an end to the infringement. Prior to that, a video generated by the Seedance 2.0 artificial intelligence (AI) went viral on the Chinese internet, featuring a scene of Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting.

According to the report, ByteDance originally planned to release Seedance 2.0 to global customers in mid-March, but these plans have now been suspended.
The report also stated that ByteDance's legal team is working to identify and address potential legal issues, and engineers are adding safeguards to the model to prevent the generation of content that could trigger further intellectual property infringement.

Since February, ByteDance has been conducting small-scale internal testing of Seedance 2.0 on its platforms such as Jimeng, Doubao, and Xiaoyunque. According to the official website, Seedance 2.0 can create cinematic-level videos based on text or images. Users only need to write detailed prompts or upload an image, and the system can generate multi-shot sequence videos with native audio within 60 seconds.
