PRABN Predicts Possible Floods in Sarawak from January 9 to 11

(Kuching, 8th) According to the state-level preliminary flood forecast released by the National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (PRABN), in view of the ongoing heavy rainfall alert, many areas in Sarawak have been identified as being at risk of flooding between January 9 and 11.
According to TVS News, PRABN stated that this forecast was issued at 11pm on January 6, following the continuous rain alert (Alert) issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).
Based on the latest analysis, a total of 8 major divisions have been listed as high-risk areas — namely Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Betong, Sri Aman, Sibu, Mukah, and Sarikei.

In Kuching Division, affected areas include the Sarawak River basin as well as several major tributaries, such as the Buntal River (Sungai Buntal), Kuap River (Sungai Kuap), Mongg River (Sungai Mongg), Minjap River (Sungai Minjap), Rayu River (Sungai Rayu), and Santubong River (Sungai Santubong), also covering the lower reaches of the Sarawak Kiri River and Sarawak Kanan River.
In Samarahan Division, the flood risk mainly focuses on the Batang Sadong and Batang Samarahan river basins, including Bedup River (Sungai Bedup), Setabau River (Sungai Setabau), Simunjan River (Sungai Simunjan), Entingan River (Sungai Entingan), Moyan River (Sungai Moyan), Semera River (Sungai Semera), and Tuang River (Sungai Tuang) areas.
Serian Division also faces flood risk, especially in the low-lying areas along the Batang Sadong and Batang Samarahan river basins.
As for Betong and Sri Aman Divisions, areas within the Batang Saribas and Batang Lupar river basins are being closely monitored due to the rising river water levels, which may worsen further under continued rainfall.

In Sibu, Mukah, and Sarikei Divisions, flood-prone areas include the Batang Rajang, Batang Balingian, and Batang Oya river basins respectively; these areas are often affected by river overflows during prolonged rainfall.
PRABN cautioned that the actual timing of floods may occur earlier or later than predicted, depending on rainfall intensity and changes in river water levels.
The authorities urged residents in high-risk areas to remain highly vigilant and adhere to the directives issued by the relevant authorities and disaster management agencies.
The public is also encouraged to obtain the latest and verified information through the official "Public Info Banjir" platform and relevant agencies' official communication channels, to avoid misinformation and ensure the safety of themselves and their families.
