(Kuala Lumpur, 23rd) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar stated that the Cabinet will further discuss the issue of US tariffs this Friday, and will only make a public response afterwards.
Speaking to the media after attending an iftar event and the launch of the "Friends of the Mosque X Fasting Youth Friends" program last night, Anwar said: "We will respond after Friday’s discussion. Please wait until Friday."
Anwar is also the Finance Minister. He was responding to the recent decision by the US Supreme Court to overturn most of the tariffs previously imposed by former President Trump. The US Supreme Court ruled that the President does not have the authority to unilaterally impose large-scale tariffs under federal law.
According to reports, Trump subsequently stated that after the Supreme Court rejected his global import tariff policy, he would impose a new 10% tariff on countries around the world under new authorization.
Anwar noted that the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is currently studying the matter.
He said that the ministry is coordinating with all relevant stakeholders, including working with counterparts in Washington and consulting Southeast Asian partners, to assess the direction of the next course of action.
