(Miri, 5th) Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, stated that although armwrestling is a niche sport, it embodies the core values of sportsmanship and is a competitive sport worthy of vigorous promotion.
This morning, in his officiating speech at the "2025 Sarawak X-Tive Armwrestling Challenge 3.0," organized by the Miri Armwrestling Association and held at the Miri Civic Center from July 5 to 6, he made these remarks. As he was unable to attend, Miri City Councilor Dato' Victor Lau Sie Nguong attended and delivered the speech on his behalf.
Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin praised the Miri Armwrestling Association (MAWA) for its efforts in promoting this sport, successfully attracting participants from various places and creating a healthy, competitive platform for the community.
"Armwrestling symbolizes strength, perseverance, focus, and fair competition — these are values highly regarded in our society. Especially for the younger generation, participating in such activities not only aids physical development but is also a positive outlet for energy."
He noted that the tournament features multiple categories, including Novice Under-18, Under-80kg, Above-80kg, and Masters over 40, demonstrating the inclusiveness and community-wide nature of the sport, allowing all ages to showcase their abilities.
"I especially appreciate the unity spirit showcased by the event, attracting not only local athletes from Kuching, Mukah, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri but also participants from Kota Kinabalu and Brunei. This truly reflects the real value of sports—breaking boundaries and enhancing exchange."
Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin also stated that as Minister of Transport and a representative of the Miri community, he will continue to support the promotion of healthy lifestyles through sports and encourage more youths to participate in such activities to make the community more vibrant and cohesive.
He added that he hopes armwrestling will be included in future Sarawak Games (SUKSAR), Borneo Games, and other official events, as well as attracting more international events to Sarawak to boost sports tourism.
Finally, he urged competitors to participate with "pride and sportsmanship," stressing that regardless of victory or defeat, the most important thing is mutual respect and the bonds formed in competition.
This event was organized by the Miri Armwrestling Association, supported by MySed, held at the Civic Center venue, and co-organized by multiple sponsors and units. The organizers hope the event will further promote armwrestling and make it a part of Sarawak's diverse sports development.
