The 6G Global Summit, hosted by the Communications Authority of Hong Kong, is being held in Hong Kong for two consecutive days starting from the 8th. Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Hill Yinghua stated that the Special Administrative Region government is making every effort to create a conducive environment to promote technological advancement and prepare for the 6G era. The authorities have already been planning ahead and taking practical actions to welcome the development of 6G.
Hill Yinghua mentioned that last November, Hong Kong became the world's first city to auction the 6 GHz and 7 GHz band radio spectrum. Currently, Hong Kong's major mobile network operators are actively conducting tests and have successfully verified the performance of 5.5G technology in various applications, including large drone shows and world-class sports events.
He indicated that the technology allows Hong Kong to create a smarter interconnected network. Additionally, the authorities also see a huge potential in developing the low-altitude economy and are actively exploring further facilitation measures from a telecommunications perspective to support the development of the low-altitude economy.
Hill Yinghua said that Hong Kong has achieved full 5G coverage, with approximately 8 million users, accounting for more than 105% of the total population last year. Hong Kong's 5G availability ranks first in the Asia-Pacific region. He emphasized that Hong Kong has unique advantages that can play a leading role in the development of 6G, highlighting that Hong Kong's infrastructure lays a solid foundation for 6G deployment, demonstrating the ability to support cutting-edge applications and services.
