(Bandar Seri Begawan, 2nd) Mr. Lin Yongming (Bantang), the esteemed elder brother of Vice Chairman of Brunei Huaguang Charity Association, Mr. Lin Xinli, and the respected father of Ms. Lin Yanping of Harbour-Link Line (B) Sdn Bhd, passed away peacefully on April 28th at the age of 83. In order to fulfill filial duties, the family specially arranged a filial lion dance ceremony at today's funeral to send their father on his final journey.
This is an extremely rare instance of using a filial lion dance at a funeral, particularly unusual in Brunei.
The filial lion used white and blue as its main colors, symbolizing solemnity, and expressed respect and remembrance for the deceased through the lion dance. During the ceremony, Mr. Lin's two grandsons each held the lion's head and tail, respectively, and danced slowly and gracefully to the mourning music, their movements steady and restrained. Unlike the lively and festive atmosphere of celebratory occasions, this performance was even more solemn and dignified, signifying the children's devotion in bidding farewell to a loved one.
During his lifetime, Mr. Lin was actively involved in traditional community cultural activities, including dragon and lion dances and festival parades, acting as a guardian of cultural heritage and serving as a drummer for the Seven-Star Drum tradition.
Friends and family at the scene were deeply moved, all expressing that this gesture not only preserved traditional culture but also demonstrated deep remembrance and respect for the ancestors, adding a uniquely meaningful way to say goodbye at the funeral.
