Was Her Role Snatched by a Major Female Star? Wu Jinyan 'Only Paid 3,000 After Filming for Half a Year'

Renowned screenwriter Yu Zheng successfully catapulted Wu Jinyan to fame with 'Story of Yanxi Palace' and has always been fond of her. Recently, during a livestream, Yu Zheng shared that before Wu Jinyan became famous, she once had the chance to star in a film by a top director, but after spending more than half a year filming, her role was snatched by another actress.

Yu Zheng revealed that Wu Jinyan was originally confirmed to star in a big-budget film. She had even arrived early at a small town for training, worked hard to learn the local dialect, and had already officially joined the shoot. However, midway through, an actress suddenly appeared and expressed her desire to play the role, causing Wu Jinyan—after being involved in the project for half a year—to receive only 5,000 RMB (approximately 2,944 MYR) as compensation. 'Then after she was replaced, they didn't let her say anything about it, and just told her to say it was a pilot or to thank her or something. In reality, she was simply replaced.'

However, Yu Zheng stated that Wu Jinyan did not complain about what happened to her; instead, she demonstrated great tenacity and optimism. Yu Zheng recalled that after hearing about the incident from someone else and asking Wu Jinyan about it directly, she responded calmly: 'It's okay. I got to work with a great director, and I had the opportunity to train. That's wonderful—it's all part of life experience.' Although Yu Zheng did not specify which film it was, netizens quickly pieced together clues and identified it as Feng Xiaogang's 'I Am Not Madame Bovary,' starring Fan Bingbing.

Yu Zheng pointed out that Wu Jinyan is a girl who 'doesn't get bogged down by negativity'—a quality he truly admires. He shared another example: once, when she had to choose between a high-paying job and a low-paying but high-quality script that clashed in schedule, Wu Jinyan chose the latter without hesitation, saying, 'That's fine, money isn't important.' Despite her agent's misgivings, Wu Jinyan firmly stuck to her choice, determined to only do what she loves—an approach that Yu Zheng finds very compatible with his own.
