(Kuala Lumpur, 27th) ASEAN and India should strive to complete the review of the 'ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement' (AITIGA) as soon as possible. Both parties can also make full use of the advantage of a young population structure and a growing middle class, and strengthen cooperation in the digital and green economies.
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong made these remarks on Sunday (October 26) afternoon while speaking at the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit.
He also pointed out that the 'ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement' (AITIGA) can strengthen two-way investment ties between ASEAN and India, as well as expand choices for people.
At the summit, the Prime Minister emphasized that the three main areas ASEAN and India can focus on developing are the economy, people-to-people exchanges, and regional peace, stability, and security.
In the rapidly developing digital economy, Prime Minister Wong noted that ASEAN and India can expand their scale and influence by connecting their respective digital payment systems. In terms of the green economy, ASEAN can learn from India’s experience in solar and hydrogen energy to meet the region’s growing demand for clean energy. "We also welcome Indian companies to cooperate with ASEAN partners to develop the ASEAN power grid."
The Prime Minister also said that ASEAN and India can jointly develop the tourism industry, explore student and research exchange programs, and that more people-to-people exchanges require support from air connections. Both sides should work to increase direct flights operated by Indian airlines to ASEAN member states.
As for maintaining regional peace, stability, and security, Prime Minister Wong believes that ASEAN and India are natural partners in upholding the relevant regional architecture. "I would like to thank India for its contributions to the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus, as well as for pragmatic initiatives in cyberspace and maritime security."
He further suggested that ASEAN and India can use the cyber policy dialogue platform to discuss cyber scams and other cross-border threats affecting both parties.
