(Bandar Seri Begawan, 12th) In order to responsibly and ethically develop artificial intelligence (AI) systems and tools, the Brunei Darussalam Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI), in collaboration with the AI Governance and Ethics Working Group, has successfully developed the 'Brunei AI Governance and Ethics Guidelines'.
According to AITI, a Public Consultation Paper (PCP) was released in July 2024, and feedback from government, industry, academia, technical sectors, and public representatives was considered in the final formulation of the guidelines.
The guidelines emphasize a principled approach aimed at providing responsible practices for AI systems and tools, such as "transparency and explainability", "data protection and data governance", "safety and security", "robustness and reliability", "fairness and justice", "human-centric approach", and "accountability and integrity". They provide fundamental practices and safeguards as a reference and guidance for agencies in Brunei that design, develop, deploy, and/or use AI technologies.
The development of the guidelines aims to promote innovation and encourage the ethical and responsible use of AI.
The principles in the guidelines are aligned with regional standards such as the 'ASEAN AI Governance and Ethics Guidelines', offering an opportunity to achieve responsible interoperability of AI systems regionally while enhancing institutional credibility and boosting consumer confidence in the use of AI systems and tools. The formulation of the guidelines indicates that, as we move towards becoming a smart nation, we continue to make progress in creating a safe and reliable digital environment.
