Forensics expert Dr. Henry Lee has passed away. On Saturday, New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi expressed his sorrow and grief in a post on Facebook.
Renowned as the “Chinese Sherlock Holmes,” the Chinese-American criminal forensics expert Dr. Henry Lee passed away at the age of 87 at his home in Nevada, USA, on the 27th of this month. New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi wrote on Facebook that Dr. Lee, known internationally, was a mentor to him and even more like an older brother.
Hou You-yi stated: “As a child, I always admired heroes who fought evil and solved cases miraculously, but it wasn’t until I joined the police force and met this great senior that legend became reality. ‘Wherever the evidence leads, that’s where the case goes.’ This phrase was Dr. Lee’s conviction, and it also became the highest principle for me and my colleagues in solving cases.”
Hou continued, when he was a section chief at Taipei City CID, whenever Dr. Lee returned to Taiwan, “I would always carry a thick stack of case files to the hotel to discuss with him. Dr. Lee always liked to tell people ‘Hou You-yi is always challenging the impossible,’ but I know very clearly that, throughout my decades of public service, he has always given me guidance at critical moments; no matter how my roles changed, he would always reach out and fight alongside me. I’ve always cherished this mentorship and friendship.”
“Deeply mourning the passing of a respected international authority in forensic science, who illuminated the truth with science throughout his life, and defended justice with professionalism.”
