Miri, 9th -- Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Seri Lee Kim Shin, stated that the firefighting competition is not only a sport but also serves as an in-depth practice for community fire safety knowledge and emergency response skills. It is hoped that through this competition, the Senadin area can further enhance the community's safety level and set an example for other regions.
Lee Kim Shin, who is also the state assemblyman for Senadin, praised the importance of this event in enhancing the community's ability to respond to fires and disasters during his closing speech at the awards ceremony. The ceremony was hosted this afternoon by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department in collaboration with the Lutong Fire and Rescue Department for the 2024 Senadin Community Firefighting Competition.
He remarked that the organization of this community firefighting competition not only provided practical training opportunities for residents but also strengthened the collaborative ability of various firefighting teams. He especially thanked the Lutong Fire and Rescue Department for successfully planning and hosting Malaysia's first community firefighting competition in Sarawak within just a year and a half since its establishment, setting a benchmark for the Senadin area.
He pointed out that Senadin is the first area in the country to host such an event, which is not only an honor for the community but also showcases the Lutong Fire and Rescue Department's ability to ensure the safety of its jurisdiction despite limited resources, including key facilities such as Petronas, Sarawak Shell, and Miri Port.
A total of 10 teams participated in this competition, coming from various villages and longhouses in the Senadin area, including Kampung Muhibbah Kuala Baram, Kampung Sealine Atas, Kampung Senadin Jaya, Kampung Batu Satu Kuala Baram, Kampung Pengkalan Lutong, Kampung Tudan Fasa 2A, Kampung Tudan Fasa 4&5, Kampung Masjid Kuala Baram, Rumah Bangau Kuala Baram, and Tudan Desaras Fasa 6.
Lee Kim Shin stated that through the competition, residents not only improved their firefighting skills but also built a sense of teamwork. He encouraged the community to maintain fire safety awareness and expressed his intention to discuss with the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department ways to provide better support and resources for community firefighting teams.
He noted that such competitions and training not only enhance residents' ability to respond to emergencies but also contribute to improving the overall fire preparedness of the Senadin area.
He looks forward to more communities and longhouses participating in similar activities in the future and promised continued support and promotion of related initiatives.
During the closing ceremony, Lee Kim Shin congratulated all participating teams and encouraged participants by saying that winning and losing are not important. What matters is gaining knowledge and experience through the competition to contribute to community safety.
