Meta Launches First AI Glasses with Built-In Display, Featuring Instant Translation and More

On the 17th, Meta officially launched its first smart glasses with a built-in screen, named Meta Ray-Ban Display, priced at $799 (RM3348). At the Meta Connect conference, Group CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that Meta’s future glasses will serve as a carrier for “super intelligence,” and further claimed that “AI should serve people, not just stay in data centers.”

Display Installed on Right Lens

According to various media reports, the Meta Ray-Ban Display has a screen installed on its right lens, with a field of view of just 20 degrees and a resolution of 600×600 pixels. It supports AI queries and application operations, including displaying messages, video calls, and map navigation, and can function as the viewfinder for the user's mobile camera, or display music playback information. In addition, the glasses come with a real-time subtitle feature, capable of instant translation and displaying subtitles on the screen.

Operable via Neural Wristband

This smart glasses model introduces a new control system: in addition to touch gestures on the frame as in previous generations, it can now also be operated via a neural technology-driven wristband, recognizing gestures such as sliding and double-tapping. In the future, “air-writing” functionality, as well as features for “focusing on conversation partners and filtering background noise,” will be added.

Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth described this as a product that “will make you increasingly likely to leave your phone in your pocket throughout the day,” adding that while phones won’t disappear, glasses offer more convenient access to popular functions.

Supports Custom Lenses, On Sale from the 30th

In terms of hardware, the glasses are equipped with a 12-megapixel external camera, capable of recording 1080p video. Like its predecessor Ray-Ban model, it can be used for six hours per charge, and with the external charging case, battery life extends to 36 hours. The display brightness ranges from 30 to 5000 nits, making it suitable for most outdoor scenarios, though it may struggle in extremely bright sunlight.

The product comes in two sizes and two colors—black and sand—and supports certain prescriptions as a customization option. It will be available for sale on September 30, with the wristband included. In terms of applications, it initially supports Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Spotify, while Instagram currently supports only the direct messaging function, with Reels viewing to be added in a later update.
