Rafizi: Malaysia's Steady Economic Growth May Attain Advanced Nation Status by 2028

Economic Minister Rafizi noted that recently, our country's economic growth is on a stable growth trajectory. Last year, in 2024, the overall economic growth rate reached 5.1%. If it continues to maintain a stable growth rate of above 4.5% in the coming years, our country is expected to reach advanced nation status by 2028 to 2029.

“Malaysia is currently on the right track, with international foreign investments showing interest to invest in our country. Coupled with our role as a crucial hub to the ASEAN market, under these and other positive factors, our country is expected to join the ranks of advanced nations.”

He stated that in the 13th Malaysia Plan, the government must ensure that all development plans are balanced, focusing not only on economic growth but also on infrastructure development such as healthcare, education, talent cultivation, and other aspects.

He mentioned that as a trade-open nation, global events and trends will have an impact on our country, citing the example of the recent change in leadership at the US White House (President) affecting our country.

He said the Ministry of Economy not only focuses on national development but also on building a solid national and community infrastructure to handle any external events with ease.

He made these remarks during a press conference on Monday morning after attending a consultation meeting on the 13th Malaysia Plan with the Kedah State Government.

When asked about the Kedah State Government's proposal to establish a 'Renewable Energy Zone' as an economic zone for solar energy projects in Kedah, Rafizi stated that the government has launched the Corporate Renewable Energy Support Scheme (CRESS).

He said previously, developing solar plants required quotas. With the government implementing this policy, the transaction process has been simplified. Without the need for quotas, as long as there is a buyer, sellers and buyers can freely transact through mutual agreements.

He added that regarding land issues, the Kedah State Government needs to address matters such as reducing land costs.

Sanusi: Kedah's Wish List Hopes for Consideration from the Economic Minister

Kedah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi expressed during his speech that he hoped the Economic Minister would consider Kedah's wish list projects in the 13th Malaysia Plan.

He mentioned that the wish list includes projects such as building new roads and elevated roads (flyovers), upgrading roads and buildings, constructing new bridges, building new clinics, and other projects deemed necessary for the people of Kedah.

At the same time, he also proposed establishing a 'Renewable Energy Zone' as an economic special zone for solar projects development in Kedah.
