(Bandar Seri Begawan, 11th) The Embassy of Japan in Brunei yesterday celebrated 35 candidates who successfully passed different levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
The 2025 JLPT certificate presentation ceremony was held at the residence of the Japanese ambassador in Brunei (located in Kampong Sungai Tilong, Brunei).
During the ceremony, Japan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Brunei, Yukita Yutaka, presented certificates to the candidates, congratulated them on their achievements, and encouraged them to continue deepening their Japanese language studies and cultural understanding.
A total of 73 people sat for the 2025 JLPT exam, which covered levels N1 to N5. Of these, 35 passed the exam, including 5 at level N2, 1 at level N3, 11 at level N4, and 18 at level N5.
Since 1984, the Japan Foundation has been offering the JLPT as a reliable method for evaluating and certifying Japanese language proficiency among non-native speakers.
Universiti Brunei Darussalam offered the JLPT course for the first time in 2008, and the test has been held every December since then. The 2026 JLPT will take place on Sunday, December 6, 2026, with registration open from August to September 2026.
Daniel, one of the candidates who successfully passed the N5 level, shared that he initially became interested in Japanese and built his foundation through self-study. Later, in addition to attending courses, he practiced communicating with Japanese friends. He stated that in the future he will continue to improve his Japanese proficiency for practical use. To master the language, he first learns new vocabulary, then tries to make sentences, continuously expanding his vocabulary.
Other attendees at the event included representatives from Brunei’s national banks, Acting Permanent Secretary of Brunei’s Ministry of Education Dr. Chan Wei Kee, Japanese language teachers from the Brunei Lifelong Learning Centre (L3C), Universiti Brunei Darussalam, and various secondary schools, and executive committee members of the Brunei Alumni of the Japan Association (BAJA).
