Communications Minister Fahmi stated that after the 2024 Communications and Multimedia Amendment Act (Act 588), passed in Parliament at the end of last year, comes into effect, it is expected to eliminate cybercrime and fraud activities.
He said the Act introduces several powers and new laws to curb these criminal activities.
He mentioned that the ministry will expedite actions and work with the police and the Communications and Multimedia Commission to address this issue.
“His Majesty also reminded people to always be vigilant against rampant fraud crimes.”
He said this to Bernama and Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) after attending the opening of the 15th Parliament, 4th Session, 1st Meeting.
Act 588 improves existing provisions, including Sections 211 and 233, to tackle online hazards, especially on social media, while introducing new provisions such as banning the sending, prompting the sending, or allowing the sending of unsolicited commercial electronic messages.
This morning, His Majesty, in his opening speech, urged the government to rigorously curb rumors and instigations on the internet and social media to prevent social division.
Fahmi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Pantai Valley, said His Majesty's statement regarding our country being the ASEAN chair this year and Visit Malaysia Year 2026 is very important.
“Since we are hosting international events, His Majesty orders us to maintain cleanliness, while enforcement agencies need to enhance preparedness to ensure crime issues are properly resolved.
“A country clean and safe from crime will certainly become the focus and destination of tourists and investors.”
