Australia Expels Iranian Ambassador over Anti-Semitic Attacks

Published at Aug 26, 2025 04:59 pm
On the 26th, the Australian government accused Iran of being the mastermind behind two anti-Semitic attacks in Melbourne and Sydney, and announced it would expel the Iranian ambassador.

This is the first time Australia has expelled an ambassador since World War II. Neither of the two attacks resulted in injuries.

Australian Prime Minister Albanese stated that intelligence agencies had reached a "deeply disturbing conclusion" that Iran had at least directed the two anti-Semitic attacks.

He cited intelligence investigation results indicating that Iran also orchestrated a large-scale arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue in December 2024.

He said: "These are extremely dangerous acts of aggression plotted by a foreign country on Australian soil... attempting to undermine social cohesion and sow discord in our community. This is completely unacceptable."

Albanese added that Australia has suspended the operations of its embassy in Tehran, and all diplomats are safely remaining in a third country.

He also stated that Australia has designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.
