Data Falsification in Nuclear Power Plant Review by Japan's Chubu Electric Power Company Condemned by Regulator

Due to data falsification found in materials submitted by Chubu Electric Power Company during the review process for restarting its nuclear power plants, Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) on the 7th harshly condemned the company's arbitrary manipulation of data and decided to continue suspending the relevant review work.

At a regular meeting, the NRA defined Chubu Electric Power Company's behavior as the improper act of arbitrarily manipulating data, and decided to independently take measures without waiting for the results of the third-party committee set up by Chubu Electric Power Company.

NRA Chairman Shinsuke Yamanaka stated that this is a case of fabrication of review data directly related to safety, clearly an improper act, and is an extremely serious and significant incident.

He said that this incident is an "outrage" against safety regulation, casting doubt on the reliability of all reviews conducted so far, and therefore it is necessary to redo the review process from scratch.

On the 5th, Chubu Electric Power Company admitted that in order to pass the review and restart Units 3 and 4 of the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant in Shizuoka Prefecture, the company was suspected of manipulating relevant data and deliberately underestimating the maximum possible destructive force of earthquakes.

According to Kyodo News, the incident came to light because the NRA received an "external report," and the NRA had already suspended the related review work as of December 2025.
