(Miri, 12th) A drowning tragedy occurred at Lutong Beach this afternoon when three young men went fishing and then played in the sea. Two brothers were unfortunately swept away by a sudden sea current and drowned, while another managed to swim ashore and call for help.
The Miri Fire and Rescue Department’s Lutong branch received a report at 2:17 PM and immediately dispatched a fire truck and a 4WD carrying nine team members to the scene. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 2:27 PM and quickly launched a search and rescue operation.
It is understood that the three young men went into the sea to play after finishing their fishing. At the time of the accident, the two deceased were swept away by a sudden sea current and sank into the water. The survivor managed to swim ashore and immediately called 999 for emergency assistance.
Upon arrival, firefighters conducted a thorough search, finding the first drowning victim's body at 2:40 PM on the edge of the beach. The second drowning victim's body surfaced at around 2:50 PM, approximately 30 meters from the shore. The bodies were moved to a safe area, and medical personnel on the scene confirmed that the two deceased showed no signs of life.
The deceased have been identified as two brothers, Muhammad Farris Bin Zamri (18, younger brother) and Muhammad Nur Fadilah Bin Zamri (23, elder brother). The survivor who successfully swam ashore is Fabian Ray anak Jerry (18).
It is understood that originally four people went fishing together, but one person felt tired and left early at noon to go home and rest. This person only learned of the accident involving his two companions around 3 PM after receiving a phone call.
The two deceased were residents of Piasau. After the incident, their parents rushed to the scene upon hearing the news. Seeing the bodies of their two sons, the mother was heartbroken and fainted, which was heartrending.
The bodies of the deceased were later handed over to the police for further processing.
