ASEAN Customs Promote Cooperation – Regional Training Center Established in Kuching

(Bandar Seri Begawan, 6th) Acting Director of Brunei Customs, Mohd Azis, and senior officials attended the 16th BIMP-EAGA Customs Chiefs Meeting. The meeting was chaired by Dato’ Wee La Anis Rizal, Director General of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.
Attendees included members of the BIMP-EAGA Customs Council, members of the BIMP-EAGA Business Council (BEBC), representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and others.
The main agendas of the meeting included: updates on projects under the BIMP-EAGA Trade Facilitation Cluster and Customs Working Group; consultations with the BEBC and the private sector on potential integration projects; and technical assistance provided by the ADB.
One of the important outcomes of the meeting was the approval of the Royal Malaysian Customs Academy (AKMAL) in Kuching, Sarawak as the BIMP-EAGA Training Center (BETC), which will serve as the main training center for BIMP-EAGA customs authorities. Delegates also attended the BETC official unveiling ceremony hosted by the Director General of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.
Afterwards, they listened to a briefing on the training facilities and toured the facilities. The Royal Malaysian Customs Academy has also been recognized as a regional training center by the World Customs Organization (WCO).
The meeting further agreed that the next BIMP-EAGA Customs Chiefs Meeting will be held every two years, with the next meeting scheduled for 2027 in the Philippines.
Brunei's participation in this meeting demonstrates its continued commitment to supporting the BIMP-EAGA agenda, which aims to strengthen regional economic integration, promote trade, and enhance cooperation among member countries of BIMP-EAGA.
