Kuching, 9th -- Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas stated that the Sarawak Public Works Department has terminated 4 projects this year, and 11 projects have faced severe delays, among which 2 are funded by the Sarawak government.
He emphasized that the current priority is to address the issue of project delays, urging relevant departments to thoroughly review the reasons and accelerate digital transformation to improve project efficiency and quality.
He pointed out that Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology is an essential tool to solve inefficiencies in the construction industry, helping designers, contractors, and owners collaborate better, reduce errors and rework, lower costs, and ensure projects are completed on time.
Datuk Amar Douglas mentioned during his speech at the first Sarawak Public Works Department Building Information Modeling Day event that the government plans to fully implement BIM for all building projects over RM10 million and infrastructure projects over RM100 million by 2030.
He stated that BIM technology is not only applicable during the construction phase but can also be used for long-term asset management, optimizing resource allocation, ensuring more efficient facility maintenance, and reducing downtime.
He revealed that the government will commission construction projects worth RM1.3 billion by 2025, and if not completed on time and within budget, the Public Works Department risks losing trust.
He urged the industry to accelerate digital transformation, promote the modernization and sustainable development of the Sarawak construction industry, and consider BIM as an investment in the future, which will help position Sarawak as a benchmark for construction innovation.
Meanwhile, the Public Works Department Director Cassidy Morris emphasized that BIM technology can significantly improve project design and execution processes, enhancing project transparency and efficiency.
He stated that digital transformation is key to addressing inefficiencies and delays in the construction industry, while integrity and governance are the foundation for project success.
He disclosed that this event attracted the participation of 850 officials, showcasing Sarawak's determination to reform the construction industry and providing a platform for learning and collaboration within the industry.
He hopes that through the application of BIM technology, Sarawak can not only face current challenges but also lay the foundation for sustainable development in the future.
