(Bandar Seri Begawan, 12th) The Enforcement Unit of the Labour Department recently carried out a business activity inspection at Kampong Salar under 'Operasi Usai 160/2026', where they discovered that an employer was suspected of violating 10 provisions of the Employment Order, Chapter 278, involving several local and foreign employees.
The violations include failing to provide employees with written employment contracts, not paying overtime wages, illegal salary deductions, requiring employees to work on public holidays, excessive working hours, and not granting statutory public holidays, paid annual leave, and sick leave.
The investigation also found that a local female employee was only granted 60 days of maternity leave, while some female employees in non-skilled positions were reportedly required to resign before giving birth. In addition, a foreign employee hired as a construction worker was instead assigned as a goods inspector, which is suspected to be a violation of the conditions of the foreign work permit.
The Labour Department is still conducting further investigations. If convicted, the employer may be fined up to 1,000 dollars for each offence; if the fine is not paid, the case may be brought to court.
The authorities remind all employers to safeguard employee welfare and fully comply with Chapter 278 of the Employment Order.
