(Brunei, 12th) Nurses and midwives are the pillars of healthcare, a noble profession that must be protected, respected, and appreciated.
Health Minister Dato Seri Setia Dr. Md Isham in his speech on the occasion of International Nurses Day (IND) and International Midwives Day (IMD) praised the important roles and contributions of nurses and midwives.
The Minister stated that the current state of modernization requires all nurses and midwives to be more proactive, developing from basic care to higher, more technical, and innovative levels.
The theme for International Nurses Day, selected by the International Council of Nurses, is “Our Nurses. Our Future. Care for Nurses, Enhance the Economy,” highlighting the critical role of a healthy nursing workforce in promoting global economic development, strengthening health systems, and improving community health.
Meanwhile, this year’s International Midwives Day theme is “Midwives: Essential in Every Crisis,” highlighting the crucial role of midwives in times of crisis.
The Minister emphasized the global crisis faced by the nursing sector, characterized by a long-term shortage of personnel, unsafe working conditions, and inadequate remuneration, leading to burnout, deterioration in the quality of care, and the movement of professionals to more favorable environments. This worrying trend poses severe consequences for public health systems, national economies, and the future of global healthcare.
The Minister stated that policymakers need to take urgent and decisive action to build a sustainable, strong, and resilient nursing workforce.
In Brunei, the Minister outlined key areas of ongoing improvement, particularly in supporting the welfare of nurses and midwives.
“Prioritizing the welfare of nurses helps to improve the quality of care, increase employee retention rates and enhance economic benefits. Nurses are pillars of the healthcare system, especially in the areas of primary care, maternal and child health, and chronic disease management.”
The Minister stated that the Ministry of Health will continue to sustain and invest in the workforce of nursing personnel through appropriate remuneration, mental health support, and ongoing professional development, to ensure Brunei’s healthcare system remains resilient and responsive, thus maintaining the nation’s well-being and stability.
The Minister stated that the Ministry of Health is committed to developing the workforce of nurses and midwives by providing opportunities for training, research, and professional development both domestically and internationally, efforts which contribute to personal growth and improve national healthcare outcomes.
The Minister stated that maintaining the welfare of nurses and midwives also involves creating a safe and supportive work environment, which not only helps to improve the quality of healthcare but also enhances staff retention rates and strengthens the overall health system, benefiting the entire community.
The Minister stated that this year’s International Nursing and Midwifery Day emphasized the importance of recognition, support, and investment in nurses and midwives. They are not just healthcare providers but are critical drivers of economic resilience, national development, and social progress.
The Minister also called on all nurses and midwives to continue to demonstrate patience, provide excellent service, and uphold unwavering dedication in their daily work.
