Blizzard Ravages Northeastern US: Thousands of Flights Canceled, 500,000 Users Without Power

The winter storm continued to batter the Northeastern United States on the 23rd, severely affecting public transportation and travel for residents. As of the afternoon, more than 5,600 flights had been canceled and over 500,000 users experienced power outages.

According to global flight tracking and aviation data platform 'Flight Tracking Website,' by 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time on the 23rd, over 5,670 flights had been canceled and more than 2,600 flights delayed that day. New York's LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport were hit the hardest, with cancellation rates reaching 98% and 90% respectively. Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and Boston Logan International Airport were also affected to varying degrees.

As of 1 p.m. Eastern Time, snowfall in Central Park, New York City had exceeded 19.7 inches (about 50 cm), with some areas reaching a snow depth of 24 inches (about 61 cm). New York City schools were closed for the day on the 23rd due to the snow. New York City Mayor Mamdani declared a state of emergency for the city, instituting a travel ban from 9 p.m. on the 22nd until 12 p.m. on the 23rd.

On the 23rd, seven states including New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut declared states of emergency. New York Governor Hochul announced the deployment of 100 National Guard troops to assist New York City, Long Island, and other areas in response to the blizzard. New Jersey issued a travel ban and suspended all in-state rail and bus operations. The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority announced a suspension of all bus services from the evening of the 22nd through the 23rd.

Heavy snowfall and strong winds caused widespread power outages in the Northeastern US. Reports indicate that, as of 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time on the 23rd, more than 500,000 users in the region were without power, with nearly 290,000 outages in Massachusetts alone.
